ThaBombShelter SXSW Report Part II
Thanks to the miracles of technology and ThaBombShelter's own Man In The Field, THE Dave Hanson, brings us the second half of his SXSW Report:Deertick: Big crowd. Soft mellow folky vibe that could use a little deodorant. See again? No.
The Rosebuds: Friendly North Carolina three-piece husband-wife band doing jangly, smart songs. See again? Yes. Crowd talked them into "one more," to the ire of:
The Phenomenal Handclap Band: New York funk, rock, jazz kind of stuff. Not happy that Rosebud cut their time short. See Again? Yes.
Jayson Lytle: Neil Young-sounding Montanan, formerly of band called Grandaddy. Guitars-a-plenty. See again ? Yes.
Earlimart: solo guy with an electric guitar. This setup is almost always either good or a disaster-- this guy is good. See again? Yes.
Flosstradamus: young DJ duo from Chicago. Had fun with some old stuff (Al Green, Michael Jackson) but kind of lost it with other choices. (Pretty sure Phil Collins was mixed in). See again? No.
Matthew and the Arrogant Sea: Lots of beards and pretty arrogant. See again? No.
The Duke Spirit: English, Divinals-sounding band led by brassy blond with shoulder pads. See again? No.
Silversun Pickups: A great show that your weary correspondent was ready to leave after two songs because the singer's voice produced an image of Gollum he couldn't shake. Luckily, Gollum can rock and has a great band. See again? Yes.
Deadstring Brothers: Bloodshot Records band from Detroit. This type of alt-country was a big deal with the cool kids five years ago, and is kind of played. Worse, not interesting. See again? No.
Ohtis: Your correspondent heard some good music from the street and went inside for a few songs. Unfortunately, about 5 Tommies from "True Life, Jersey Shore" were dancing up front, so not much attention was paid to the music for fear of getting lit up. Appears this was not a SXSW show. See again? Only without Tommy.
The Love Me Nots: " Sucktastic" was the quote from your correspondent's friend Aina. See again: No
Titus Andronicus: Great loud and fast stuff. Total energy. See these guys. See again? Yes.
Overall Take: bands are getting younger as the world gets older. Seems like the majority of bands have one or more females in key roles, which is much different than not too long ago. Sadly, not a single official Brush With Fame this year, even at airport.
Many thanks to The Dave Hanson, everyone. Maybe next year I'll be able to witness SXSW in person!

Dave - sorry you had to sit through so much crap to find a few good ones. I think I would have blown my head off if I had seen one more hipster with glasses and an acoustic guitar. I would have gone to see the Bronx and everything would have been good.
Looks like my band Ohtis is leaning more toward yes than no and I appreciate that! Although, I just did a google image search for "tommy true life jersey shore" and I do not recall anybody that looked like this dancing to our music. ...Don't recall anyone dancing to our music in general, actually.
:)
lol! Well, I assured Dave that you guys were a choice act. Can't wait to catch you again!
Well, I feel stupid. I saw this comment and then listened to a few snippets of Ohtis on Itunes. There is no way the band I saw and reviewed is the same as what I just heard. One of the Tommy True Life guys told me the name of the band. Must have been some sort of mistake-- It was really loud. I am very sorry for this screw-up. I did just buy "hatefully in love" on Itunes. Good stuff. I'd like to actually see you guys at some point.
Dave
