Lost in the Library: Test Planet and Plant 12

It should come as no surprise that with 93 Gigs of music on my computer things tend to get lost in the shuffle. Thus my excitement when I stumbled upon these two forgotten gems over the weekend as I cleared and refilled my iPod with fresh tunes.

When I was plodding through the "P's"I found the Planet 12 tracks and I was immediately transported back to that show - it must have been in about 2001, freshman year of college or so - at The High Five with Planet 12, Test Planet and The Secret Sound of the NSA. I remember being really pissed because the two friends that came with me were more interested in occupying a booth in the back of the club than seeing these three amazing local bands played out. After Planet 12's electrifying set, I sought out one of the beautiful, rocking front women, and snagged a copy of their debut EP, "Eclipsed". I also grabbed a demo disc (CDR, natch), from the other band, Test Planet. Both of these discs seem to surface every few years, and every few years I fall back in love with them. Tiny nuggets of greatness that are all I've got from these two elusive (now defunct) local bands.

I sought out some information on these bands after I stumbled back upon these songs. As it turns out, in 2004 Planet 12 was reborn as another local stalwart, (and band I always tell myself I need to check out) Red Dahlia. Test Planet, however, have come to a less uncertain fate. I can only find some oblique references to the band on sites like cringe.com, but all of them are very dated, and none have any definitive information about the outcome of the band. I'm guessing they've since broken up, but if anyone out there knows what's become of Test Planet, or knows someone who does, I'd love to know.

Glad you enjoyed it! I know I'm always surprised with how contemporary it still sounds. I know it was only 8 years or so ago, but nowadays, that might have been another world!

Hi, I played drums for Test Planet. I remember that show with Planet 12. Our last show was in 2003 or 04 sometime at Ruby Tuesday on Summit. Jay (singer/bass) lives in Philadelphia, and Jerry (guitarist) lives in Phoenix. Real jobs broke us up. I would love to reunite sometime for another show, but it's probably unlikely. Jay's family lives here, and his sister Anna Wuerth is in the band Flotation Walls. I still live in Cbus, but I'm not playing with anyone since Test Planet. I have a bunch of newer tracks from 2004 that we never released if you're interested.

The things one stumbles upon...

Hi Harry!

I'm the guitar player for The NSA -- I remember that show, and you being there! Thanks for chance to reminisce. I'm still in Columbus, but only for a few more months -- my wife just got a job in South Dakota, so I'll be giving fresh air and clean living a try.

Now I'm going to take a listen to those Test Planet tracks. I loved those guys!

Thanks again,

Grant

That is awesome Grant, I'm glad you found me! I remember many shows with The NSA (The one at the Northberg when Bill had to get me in to the bar (I was under 21) and you guys did your Kick Our The Jams montage thing. I also recall The Animal breaking a cymbal at the CD Release Party at Little Bros. Good times.
