National Record Store Day (and some Housecleaning)

As some of you may know by now, this weekend marks the first annual Record Store Day. Here in Columbus, pretty much every record store I know of is having some kind of sale or something or other, and even in Cincinnati (where I'll be this weekend) has some choice spots. Emily and I (and my future Brother-in-Law, Adam) will be visiting Everybody's Records in Cincinnati, but I'm definitely sad that I'll be missing some great sales/in-stores here in Columbus. I'll try to break some of the haps for you here:

Lost Weekend Records (Columbus) [ThaBombShelter personal favorite]-
Here are all the special sales we have lined up for this one day only:

ALL USED LPs are 33% off marked price including $1.00 records (so they are only 67 cents)
ALL USED 7" singles are 45% off marked price
ALL 78rpm records normally $1.00 are only 78 cents
ALL NEW LPs and singles will be $1.00 off
ALL T-Shirts are $5.00 off marked price
and if that was not all we are bring back the FREE Herb Albert records with any purchase.

Killer savings and free Herb

Lost Weekend Records were everyday is record store day.

Used Kids Records (Columbus)-
"Used Kids Records is thrilled to announce its participation in Record Store Day 2008. On Saturday, April 19, we will join hundreds of other independent record stores across the nation in celebrating music and community outside the confines of corporate hegemony. Used Kids has planned a full day of festivities for anyone interested in joining the party: live music all day, 20% off any used item, trivia, and various surprises. Some of Columbus’ finest bands will begin playing at 12 p.m. and continue until the store closes at 8 p.m. Current line-up includes the Guinea Worms, Mors Ontologica, Necropolis, Vegetative State, Moviola, Mike Rep and The Quotas, and more! Guest DJ Adam Elliott of Times New Viking. There is absolutely no cover. Please see the Record Store Day website – or call 614-294-3833 for more details."

Magnolia Thunderpussy (Columbus)- (via DoneWaiting.com)
[Robert Duffy]will be dj-ing...but a lot more professional people will be DJing there, too. Seriously I am the most amateur person performing at Magnolia’s on Saturday for Record Store Day, but that only means it gets better.

Also DJing (schedule coming soon):

Blueprint
Matt Miner + Matt Bailey of Teeth Of Hydra
Matt Whitehurst from Pyschedelic Horseshit
J-Rawls
DJ True Skills
Envelope
Robert Duffy
Will From Brainbow
Johnny Cashola
Wes Flexner
Martin from Weedstealer
Ashley Brookes
Danielle Kline
Gay Aleks

Personally I am bringing a bunch of free stuff from people like Beggars, Dangerbird, Barsuk, Filter Magazine and others. But I think there’s gonna be a toooon of stuff.

Magnolia Thunderpussy’s Wes Flexner says:

We managed to emotionally extort large labels and artists to a level that I have no idea of everything we have. There are 15 unopened boxes for record store day sitting in front of me from places like Matador, Sony, Universal, Nonesuch, Warner Bros. and all their subsidaries.

Rhymesayers bought our customers candy. Victory Records made a comic book. I don’t know all what we have. But I know we have a lot of it. And much of it is vinyl shaped. We open at 10 and close at 9.

So come on down, 1155 N High St. in Columbus Ohio. For all you people who stopped buying music and only steal it on the internet, all of this free music being given away will make you feel right at home.

Everybody's Records (Cincinnati)-
Record Store Day is this Saturday, April 19th! Record stores across the nation will be celebrating by holding special events, sales, and other exciting features to honor the timeless institution of the local music store.

We are excited to be taking part in the coolest holiday ever created! Read on to get the scoop on the sales and giveaways we have in store for the 19th!

Everybody's Records will have a whole lotta music on sale this Saturday! A great selection of CDs from the big names like Warner Bros. and Universal -- as well as CDs from indie labels like Matador, Touch & Go and Sub Pop -- will be on sale for $9.98 or less! Stop in for awesome deals and some refreshments, too!

From the time we open Friday, April 18th through the time we close on Sunday, April 20th... enter our raffle and you might be a winner of some fun and fabulous prizes to include the following:

-A collection of blues dvds from the Live From Austin Texas series; a three-pack of DVDs which include performances by Albert Collins, Roy Buchanan and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown!

-An Epiphone electric guitar signed by The Sick Puppies!

-A Sony USB turntable!

-and more!!

We will draw names on Monday and contact you if your name is selected. One entry per customer, please, and all we will need is your name and number when you stop in. You must enter in-person at the store on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

And at pretty much every store:
Merge Records is giving away a Wye Oak/Destroyer Split Seven Inch:

On Saturday, April 19, 2008, hundreds of independently owned music stores across the country will celebrate Record Store Day. Merge will be doing our part to help these great cultural institutions celebrate by giving away a FREE limited edition split seven-inch record featuring new unreleased songs by Destroyer and Wye Oak.

The only way to get one of these seven-inches is to visit a participating independent music store on Record Store Day, Saturday, April 19, and see if they have one on hand.

Track listing:
A. Destroyer, "Madame Butterflies"
B. Wye Oak, "Prodigy"

Here are some songs that sprung to mind when I thought of Record Store Day:

"Saturday Night" The Langley Schools Music Project
"Hey Mr. DJ I thought We Had a Deal" They Might Be Giants
"Cincinnati Traveller" Hem

I mentioned "Housecleaning" and by that I mean I forgot to post the Okkervil River live tracks from the show last Friday, and while I was looking through my files, I stumbled upon some live tracks from the Thao Nguyen concert at Skully's a few weeks ago. So, check 'em out, and enjoy!

"John Allyn Smith Sails" Okkervil River Live at The Newport
"Unknown Song" Okkervil River Live at The Newport (any help on this track name would be fantastic)
"Beat (Health, Life and Fire" Thao Live at Skullys
"Bag of Hammers" Thao Live at Skullys
