"The Little Acorn" Fruit Bats

I was planning on writing another "Show Preview" post for the concert tomorrow night, but Frontrow had other plans. The tunes were playing from the iMac when I was finishing up the dishes and this gem was flowing from the speakers. "The Little Acorn" is one of those tracks that is your absolute favorite song when it's playing, but once it's over you almost forget it. That is, until it comes on again and you just can't believe you've lived your life this long without it. I'm not gonna lie, but I always get the Fruit Bats confused with the Aqua Bats. I'd always had a hard time reconciling the adolescent fun of, "Pizza Day" with the truth and beauty of "The Little Acorn".

From reading the wiki, I learned that the main guy who started the band, Eric Johnson, is now in the Shins. This makes me sad for any number of reasons, foremost of which is that despite the fact he says that he plans on continuing Fruit Bats as a side project, I have little faith in the actual truth of that statement. It reminds me of how I've stumbled upon so many bands after they've broken up or just before they've called it quits. I bought my copy of "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" in 2006, I fell in love with Pulp just before they released "Hits" to finish off their contract with Island, and I discovered The Unicorns a few months after they apparently played a free show at OSU and have been lamenting the loss ever since. So it is with not-so-bated breath that I await more music from the Fruit Bats camp, even if I only just (re) discovered them tonight. I mean, shit, mere moments ago they finally migrated from Emily's computer onto my iPod, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't waiting impatiently to listen to them tomorrow while I toil away at the Cube Farm.
