ThaBombShelter UnderCover Day Two: Country Fried!
You know, when I was listening to this playlist this afternoon, I was struck by just how fun it was. Country covers are a blast, and here I am, sharing them with you."Georgia On My Mind" Ray Charles
"Georgia On My Mind" Willie Nelson
"Georgia On My Mind" Taylor Hicks
Taylor's version is absolutely great. Now he may be the American Idol winner, but when he recorded this version he was just a soul singer in Alabama. His is still my favorite version.
"(Ghost) Riders In The Sky" Johnny Cash
"(Ghost) Riders In The Sky" Me First and the Gimmes Gimmes
This one was made famous for me by the Blues Brothers, and to be honest I'm not 100% sure who did the original.
"Jackson" Johnny Cash and June Carter
"Jackson" Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon
"Jackson" Hem
"Jackson" Brakes (aka brakesbrakesbrakes)
I like Reese Witherspoon's singing voice, Joaquin on the other hand...Then you've got Sally Ellyson taking it soft and slow and Brakes bustin' out a rockin' take. Think of it as an exercise in how many different ways you can play a song.
"On The Road Again" Willie Nelson
"On The Road Again" Me First and the Gimmes Gimmes
Fun Fun Fun.
"Sad Songs and Waltzes" Cake
"Sad Songs and Waltzes" Willie Nelson
Not sure who's covering who, exactly, but it was interesting to hear Willie singing a song I grew up with.
"Sam Hall" Richard Thompson
"Sam Hall" Johnny Cash
This one is interesting in that it's not an exact cover. I'm pretty sure Richard Thompson's version is a more accurate rendition, seeing as how the wiki tells me that "Sam Hall" (or "Jack Hall") is a traditional English folk song. But regardless, it's neat to hear how Johnny sings one version and Richard sings another.
"Sweet Home Alabama" Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Sweet Home Alabama" hoses
Not all covers have vocals. Hell, this one proves that not all covers have instruments! From a collection of 8-bit style covers I stumbled across, this is something that's becoming more and more popular as the chip-tune movement gains steam in this 21st century, "Bands" making music with the sounds that were the soundtrack of a childhood spent in the blue-green glow of an NES in the downstairs TV Room.

It's funny to me how many Johnny Cash songs are covered by Willie Nelson, and how many Willie Nelson songs are covered by others...
Indeed. Some could call it inbred, but that would be too easy :-p
I guess you could also argue that there are so many because the songs are so good!
