ThaBombShelter Top 15 Songs 2007

I know many of you will be reading this in 2008, but I promise this was posted in 2007. These are the Top 15 songs here at ThaBombShelter in 2007. Some I've written about before, others I haven't, others I just discovered this past weekend! Whatever the history between the song and myself, they are all great. Enjoy!

#1 - "Gold" Interference Buy

I was sitting at work one day when I realized this was the best song of the year. I sent Emily an email that just said, "Gold is fucking amazing". This song was easily the standout track from the Once OST, was a fantastic scene in the movie itself, and is still beautiful, traditional yet contemporary, and just all around the best song of the year.

#2 - "Resurrection Fern" Iron & Wine Buy

This is still my favorite track from "The Shepherd's Dog", and it was a really tough call between this and "Gold". I remember when I was listening to this album for the first time and I literally sat up and looked at my iPod to see what this song was called. Sam Beam perfectly meshes his new, fuller sound with the bedroom intimacy of his earlier work.

#3 - "Marine Life" Oakley Hall Buy

I've loved this song since the moment I heard it, and it broke my heart when Merge wouldn't let me post the track for your all before the album came out. Listen and be transfixed.

#4 - "My Own Bare Hands" (NSFW) Ween Buy

I think if you know me, or have been reading long enough to come close, this isn't really a surprise. If, however, you're used to reading other blogs, this may be an interesting choice. The thing is, this is the song that got me interested in Ween. It's so phenomenally vulgar, so energetic and clever, and it's got my favorite line of the year, "She's gonna be my cock professor/studyin' my dick!/She's gonna get her Master's Degree in fuckin' me!" Classic.

#5 - "All I Need" Radiohead Buy

When the songs starts off - calm, gentle, beautiful - it's good. But that moment, about 2:58 in, when the piano and strings swell and Thom Yorke's voice rises, rises, rises, it just gives me chills and elevates this good song to some magical place far far beyond.

#6 - "Departed" Kaslo Buy

A great young band from Athens up and blew me away 2 hours from my home on a school night. Those jerks! They had this song up on their MySpace and I knew it was great from the start. When I heard the higher quality album version, I was transfixed. Take this as your lesson to never ever ever miss an opener at a concert, you might just miss your new favorite band.

#7 - "Anyone Else But You" The Moldy Peaches Buy (if you check the iTunes store, you can buy it there now, I just hate the button they foist upon you if you want to link directly)

I heard this on the "Juno" trailer, but after seeing the movie and listening to the lyrics, it's especially powerful for someone so ridiculously in love, the overly-emotional words actually ring true, "I don't see what anyone else can see in anyone else/but you." (oh, and name checking the Konami code? Priceless)

#8 - "Corazon" Bishop Allen Buy

A song about a piano. And not just any song about any piano, try a pitch perfect, pop-song with lyrics that would make a writing prof proud, about a mistreated and mistuned instrument that literally changed the way they made music. This song is amazing.

#9 - "D.A.N.C.E." Justice Buy

Talk about a letdown. I bought "†" on the strength of this phenomenally catchy dance tune (thanks, Stereogum), and when I heard the other tracks, I was so disappointed. Far from the next Daft Punk, these guys are like the next "Weather Girls".

#10 - "Black Like Me" Spoon Buy

This wasn't my first favorite song from "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" but it's certainly the one that's stuck with me the longest. It's got a weariness to it, a sweaty high ball of Maker's on the rocks, of worn-in boots and second-skin blue jeans.

#11 - "Hustler" Simian Mobile Disco Buy

I realized today that this song is a simple corollary to the copy-fight that consumers, music-bloggers, and students are all involved in. The RIAA should snag this song for their campaign, shit, they can probably find it on The Pirate Bay.

#12 - "Challengers" The New Pornographers Buy

I hopped on the New Pornographers boat pretty late in the game (I think I got "Challengers" in October, after I heard "Mutiny, I Promise You" on CD101. Neko Case has a great voice, and this album is good, I just didn't really have a chance to fully absorb as much as I'd like.

#13 - "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" Fall Out Boy Buy

I am a HUGE sucker for shallow pop music. Last year I was obsessed with Hellogoodbye, and this year, I got hooked on "Infinity on High".

#14 - "Fans" Kings of Leon Buy

Emily HATES this song. I mean, hates it like she hates Blueberry Bagels and jelly beans. But. I love it. I can really take or leave Kings of Leon, but this song is catchy and when the drums hit in and the song picks up, I'm done for.

#15 - "Gospel Plow" The Hackensaw Boys Buy

Buh-loo-grass. Between The Hackensaw Boys and The Avett Brothers, I'll take the Boys any day. This song is an out of control train and a big tent revival and a band on the lam all rolled into one.

Thanks again for all the support and comments this past year. I have some fun things planned for early 2008, some great albums on deck, and I hope you all keep coming back and keep enjoying your stay here at ThaBombShelter!

ps- I'm currently experiencing some issues with my hosting service, so right now all of my back-catalog mp3 links (most notably those from UnderCover week and the Top Eleven of 2007 and Top Photos) are dead. If there are any songs you wanna hear, until I get this business straightened out, just send me an email to thabombshelter [at] gmail [dot] com, or you can leave a comment with your email, and I'll send it your way! Have a safe NYE and a Happy 2008!

Very nice selection, Harry!

"Resurrection Fern" is one of my very favorites of The Shepherd's Dog too; I put it in my Best Albums post.
I also really like that Oakley Hall song. Thanks, I had not heard it before.

As for Fallout Boy: "I'm a little man, and I'm also evil, also into cats, also into caaaaats!"
