"Me and Mrs. Jones" Michael Bublé vs. Billy Paul, the 100 Word Showdown

So last night I thought of a fun new way to do a review, and I think they'll be featured throughout this month of May. They're called 100 Word Reviews, and you guessed it, they will all have 100 words, including intro-bits, but not including links. These (and other things) will also be cross posted at 100words.com, a website along the lines of NaNoWriMo (but all year long). The goal is to write 100 words, no more, no less, every day for a month. I've done it twice before, and I'm planning on doing for May, care to join me?

Billy Paul starts with his sweaty, summertime voice - a damp set of sheets in the late afternoon. His hands are soft and dry, utterly belying the illicit circumstances of this meeting. The instrumentation is lush and timeless, soft saxophones sidling effortlessly into the bedroom, amber strings providing the mood lighting for this affair. It's one of those songs that is somehow able to attain commercial success, even with the overt sexual content, and all that in 1972. Yet another reason the 70's are so fascinating, such incongruities. The incongruousness is further cemented given the unconventional look of Billy Paul himself.

From "Call Me Irresponsible," released today, Bublé's version takes the sweat and passion out of the affair. He's watering it down for a Starbucks generation of easily offended ears, with his buttery, Venti Vanilla Latte (pro-whip) vocals, it's just hard to imagine him seducing anyone, let alone Mrs. Jones. Or maybe his version is perfect. Maybe he's a modern day Benjamin Braddock and Mrs. Jones meets him at the Panera on Camrose. Maybe they have lattes instead of martinis. Maybe he gets into her Touareg and they speed off to the subdivision for a torrid tryst in her Wamsutta sheets.

I like Michael Buble alright, but something about his take makes me think "Michael Bolton, is that you?".
