"Sweet Olive Tree" Langhorne Slim
Thanks to the Paste Magazine review section I got my hands on the "Engine EP" by Langhorne Slim and I have been thoroughly enjoying this gem for the past few days. I'm not a Langhorne virgin, but I am rather new to his particular brand of folk/alt-country. I first heard him when he stopped by Daytrotter and recorded this set for them. I really enjoyed the music but for some reason or another I never followed through until this weekend. When I started listening to his actual recorded stuff I was struck by the pain and sincerity in his voice. Even when he's singing about having a picnic or some other banal activity, he's got blood in his throat and ache in his timbre. This song starts ages ago and miles away. It's got a soulful, twanging guitar and Slim's distinct vocals. The bus has just left the station and a tall, brown, dusty plume is reaching heavenward with billowing tendrils. The sky is blue in the far off distance, but the small white clouds twitter across the horizon and hope is there, even if your love is on her way to somewhere not here, in a cramped bus and a million stops. You'll probably see her again. You'll talk to her on the phone at whatever tiny town she eats dinner in, you'll send her letters and she won't forget you. She knows you and you know her...you think.
