XXX-Mas Week Day Two: "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" Death Cab For Cutie

From the latest installment of the "Maybe This Christmas" CDs (sadly, I think it might have been the last), this XXX-Mas gem from Death Cab caught me off guard this morning at work. I picked this up specifically for XXX-Mas week, and just listened for the first time today. The album started off well enough, with tracks from The Polyphonic Spree and The Raveonettes, but when Ben Gibbard and Co. started into their contribution, I was smitten. Placed firmly between the indie sensation, "Transatlanticism" and major label sensation "Plans" this song is quintessential D-Cab.

The song, starts with plenty of guitars and Gibbard's croon, and when the piano hits that first note, you know the classic is alive and well and living in Bellingham, WA. When Ben drops low and the drums are the only accompaniment and he just says, "They're singing Deck the Halls" it makes you believe in Christmas, it makes the snow and the stress and the lines all worthwhile, because you have this song to make all that bullshit just fade away. Being a relatively new Death Cab fan, I am continually amazed with just how good this band is capable of being. I heard "Plans" first, then "Transatlanticism" and finally this, and it's like they just don't know how to make bad music.
